I have touched on some key factors necessary for online success in past posts. Of course the website itself is very important – in how it’s put together and optimized, in it’s visual appeal, in its ability to keep visitors interested, in its links in and out, in its keywords and quality content – factors, when combined, amount to search engine optimization, or SEO. But there is another term that has become equally important, and that phrase is social media optimization, or SMO. As a business owner, marketer, or salesperson, do not under estimate the power of social media. No longer will search engine marketing alone drive all the sales and success which may be possible. Focusing on search engine marketing alone, and leaving out social media marketing, is like making sure you’re advertising on the billboard on the side of the interstate, but then forgetting that everyone is actually hanging out in the nearby city, where you do not have any signs…
If all this sounds too technical for you, or you’re just not sure what to do – rest easy knowing there are search engine marketing experts available to help you.
There is much to learn in the world of online marketing and success, and the road can be long if you’re just starting out. Sure, there are simple tips you can follow along the way, to improve results. Depending on your level of knowledge, and desire for results quickly, you may opt to look into working with a search engine marketing firm, employing skilled experts who know and understand what it takes to succeed.

Do You Have Your Slice of the Pie?
Having a successful business in today’s technical word includes making one’s presence known on the internet. I help manage a small traditional family business in a specialized/skilled trade field of home construction/ renovation. I can tell you first hand that the majority of all our leads come from our internet presence. Without our website, and established internet presence, I am quite positive the economic downturn, recession, or whatever you want to call it – would have done our business in. We have managed to build a website and presence that returns our website near the top of natural search results, for the terms we targeted in our industry. So, while we were among many other struggling small business owners when the economy sank, we have managed to hold on – and I do attribute that to our internet presence.
So, whether you have a traditional business, a home based business, or are an affiliate or representative for a network marketing or MLM company, internet presence is a must for big success. That’s how I see it. You may be able to open your doors and see some success without it, but recognize that without it, you are undoubtedly missing out on a big slice of pie. While this is especially true for businesses who target larger and wide ranging markets, it is equally true for your mom and pop small business on the corner. There are a lot of people out there who currently do not know the business exists, which would change for many, once an internet presence is established.
It’s not a super easy overnight task, but it’s definitely something that the average person can take on, learn, and work their way through, especially with the many various options available for website creation. It’s a start. Hosting companies such as Yahoo Web hosting offers a one stop shop, offering various options for website creation, plus hosting services. And there are many more similar services. Luckily the world wide web is not short on information related to any topic, especially website creation and optimization, and internet presence.
Refer back to a previous post I wrote, Making your Website Search Engine Friendly, for some tips to keep in mind while building your new website.
A 7-Minute Work Week?
I hadn’t heard of it either – until recently. I first heard the term in reading some info from a team website with Zeek Rewards. Zeek Rewards is a program that is essentially the marketing arm for Zeekler.com, a penny auction site. ZeekRewards is spreading like crazy, and I believe the main reason is that it’s easy. Here’s the bottom line: I place an ad each day (just like the one you see on the side of this website); I let the company know where I’ve placed their ad; I get paid. They basically share their profits, for our posting the ads. The term “7-minute work week” is referring to the fact that it only takes a minute of my time to place that ad and register it with the company, letting them know where I’ve placed it.
I know. It sounds easy and too good. But I invite you to take a closer look ~
First, you may start with a full webinar, explaining how it works in detail:
Next, check out this team video which gives a great overview!
Zeek Rewards
Could making cash be as easy as placing one small ad each morning, taking only seconds of my time? Apparently yes it can be that easy, and it is!
ZeekRewards is the marketing arm for a penny auction site, Zeekler.com. They have created a genius way to get the word out about their penny auction site – a site where consumers are taking home brand name products at 90% savings. ZeekRewards offers daily cash rewards for simply placing one ad per day. You can use your social network, one of many suggested classified ad sites, your own blog or website…Just pick one of their many suggested ads, post it, register with ZeekRewards the URL or location of your ad – and that’s it.
ZeekRewards actually offers six different ways to earn money:
1. ZAP Commissions
2. Retail Store – Margin Checks
3. Retail Profit Pool
4. Retail Subscription Profits
5. Shopping Daisy
6. 2×5 Matrix with Matching Bonuses
I believe the most powerful part of this program is the Daily Cash Rewards on your VIP Point Balance, which generally averages about 1.4% daily though it’s very important to note that earnings are never guaranteed and results vary.

Benefits of Working from Home
With six children, of course I am needed! Not only am I needed at home with my children, but I want to be home with them. There is no one else who can be their mom, and if I can find a way to stay home with them, that’s where I’ll be. When I think about 40 hours per week away from them – every week – well it’s a crushing thought. And that is without considering commuting time. Time waits for no one, and tends to fly by at mach speed as it is. Granted, while working from home, there are hours that I spend with my main focus being work, but I can easily bounce in and out of the work place considering it is physically located in my front room, where my children are. I can pause from work at any time. I can decide to work later in the evening, or during nap or quiet time. This allows me to be with my children all day, even if I must fit some work in during the day.
Biggest advantages are:
- Obviously as a mother, being with my children all day
- You decide when to clock in and clock out
- Comforts of home while working (work in PJs sometimes?)
- You’re the boss
Of course there are disadvantages as well, though the benefits weigh in far greater. It can be perfect as long as there is some flexibility in your work. Deadlines, for instance, must be somewhat flexible or at least known enough in advance, that interruptions are okay.
- Work progress is sometimes affected by distractions of home and children
- Often certain tasks just have to wait, and need to be worked around the children (professional phone calls, for instance, sound a lot less so with a child screaming in the background)
- You’re the boss (yes this is an advantage and a disadvantage because sometimes you’re not as motivating to yourself as someone else may be)
- Comforts of home while working (again, how can this appear on both lists? Well, you don’t want to hang out in PJs every day, do you? And the kitchen is right there, but you should probably only visit it a couple of times)
The children always come first, so as long as that is kept in mind, it can be a perfect option for a mom who wants to make financial gains without giving up precious time or involvement with her kids.
Social Media for Business Exposure
Facebook quickly came on scene and connected people from all over the world socially. Both before and after Facebook came other social and business networking websites. No doubt these websites make it very easy to reach large amounts of people without cost. While I believe business professionals and marketers should use social media as an exposure outlet to attract potential customers and consumers, one should also be careful in their approach as it is easy to over saturate associates, acquaintances, friends, and new connections with too much advertising hype…and they will un-follow and un-friend.
Some of the most popular websites for connecting with people include Facebook of course, along with Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace, and Google+ – with new ones constantly making their way to the growing list.
When posting on these sites, try to offer something to your followers besides pushing your product or service, whether it be words of advice, inspiration, or valued information. Do not make the mistake of looking like an annoying flashing neon sign – which will quickly be turned away from. Yes it may get attention, but likely not the kind you want. If you have ever walked on to a car lot and met a pushy car salesman, then you know exactly what I’m talking about. Try to put yourself in the mind of your audience, or potential customers. What would make you want to click? What would attract you? What would be valuable to you? How can your product or service be integrated in with information or current news? You may find you can use current events, or other articles as a spring board into your product or service. Be creative.
If you want to be a neon flashing sign on social media, then take advantage of the actual advertising campaigns these sites offer, whereby you can pay for targeted ads to be shown.
Be real. Keep a sense of persona to your advertising on social networks. You have reached out and befriended people who seem like minded. You may have real friends on your list as well. Keep it real for all of them. Interact.
Making your Website Search Engine Friendly – SEO Basics
Awwww…the importance of SEO, or Search Engine Optimization. Yes it’s very important, because without it – how are people going to find you?
Ideally you want your website to be returning in search results naturally, under all the specific keywords and phrases that relate to your website. How do you do this?
I have worked on websites, in one form or another, for the last decade and while I may not be a certified “expert”, I have learned a thing or two. I have seen my own website turn up at the top of natural search results for specific targeted keywords – and stay there – through solely my own efforts – with many other websites competing for that same spot.
While I will focus on search engine optimization here, you will want to keep these points in mind when building your website, as it is ideal to implement some of these during the build. Here are some basics:
1) Content. Search engines love content because they want to return quality results for their audience. So the more quality content you have on your website, the better.
2) Keywords. Not only do you want content, but you want the content to include keywords describing your products, service, or description of your website – the same keywords you would want returning your website on a search. Word of caution – you do not want to go overboard on use of the keywords or the content will go from quality to gibberish.
3) Meta Tags. Meta tags are codes “behind” the website that give more information to the robots that crawl the website. The most common meta tags are “Title”, “Description”, “Keywords”, and “Robot” tags. The first three are obvious – basically these tags tell the robots and search engines how you want your website titled and described when returned or listed. Keywords give the robots more information about the website’s topic. Robot tags give the robots instructions on whether to index the page, and follow the links within the page. The tags are important because it is an available means to communicate with the robots and obtain some control over your website listing/ description.
4) Links. The search engines recognize how many other websites link to your website, which contribute to popularity of your website. So, you want quality websites pointing back to your website. Key word here is quality. There are some quality directories and search engines you can submit to for an incoming link. In addition, you can participate in link partnering, where you exchange a link with another website. In fact, there are some services which facilitate link partnering, such as linkpartners.com and linksmanager.com.
5) Current content and regular updates. Search engines know if your site is going stale, and they like learning that you keep it updated with current information and content.
This list can become pretty complex and detailed, but I wanted to cover some basic search engine optimization points to keep in mind when building your website. Follow these points and you will be on your way to building a search engine friendly website, which equals discovery and visits.
Marketing Successfully Online…Where to start
There are many aspects to marketing successfully online. First things first. A website.
Ideally, you want to have a place to drive your traffic to, where you have control. Many programs offer websites as part of their program. This is ideal for less technical folks because the work is done, so you can strictly focus on traffic sources. The downside of this type of “copycat” website is lack of control and lack of traffic from natural searches.
If you want to be found on search engines, then you will want to consider creating your own website. Not only does this give you control of the content and design, but it also enables your website to be found on major search engines. Of course there is much to learn as far as how to be found on major search engines.
Back to our website basics. First thing you want to do is secure a good domain name. Be creative because most are already taken – but also focus on keeping it simple so people can easily remember and spell the URL/ domain. Now building basics: If you are new to website building, then you will want to start with a simple program. I found Yahoo Sitebuilder to be very easy and user friendly. The program is free when you opt to have your website hosted at Yahoo! Web Hosting – 25% off for the first 3 months. One advantage to this route besides ease, is convenience. You can find and secure your domain name, get your website hosted, and get website building tools and software all in one place – and all for one low price.
Another fairly simple program is WordPress (which this site is ran on). WordPress is free, which is a huge bonus. There is a learning curve so it might be slightly more difficult than the Yahoo idea for newbies, but it’s designed to be pretty user friendly. Additionally, WordPress is so popular that there are tons of third party plug ins. So most ideas you come up with for your site, are available to implement – ready for upload and free of charge. The drawbacks to this route are: a little more of a learning curve rather than the simple drag and drop type of mode available in Yahoo SiteBuilder; and you must secure your domain name and host separately.
When designing your website, it is helpful to try to think of yourself as a new visitor to the website, so you can try to see what your audience sees. Lead with captive words, find images (word of caution on images – make sure they are your own or you have permission to use them or you could be headed for big copyright trouble). When you think of search engine optimization (aka SEO…optimizing your site so the search engines like it), think of content rich and keywords. Keywords are words that best describe your program, product, and/ or service. These are the words that you want to focus on; words that, when searched, will result in your website being returned. You will want to look up meta tags and make sure your website uses them appropriately. Meta tags are coded into a website, for the search engines – to help identify what the website is about. Main meta tags include Title tag, Description tag, Keyword tag, and Robot tag (this tag instructs crawling robots on whether to follow the links through on your page and index, or not).
After creating your website, you will want to submit and list it. Of course, make sure to submit it to the major search engines such as Bing, Yahoo, Google – but also spend time submitting it to directories. You want websites pointing back to your website, so you will want to list it in as many quality places as possible. Many of these will turn into link partnering, where you are asked place their link on your site in exchange for your link on their site.
While there is a lot of detail that goes into building and optimizing a website, this was meant to be a basic getting started outline. We will be outlining more details in future posts!
